Rutina Wesley returns to the South for Ava DuVernay’s “Queen Sugar”

Rutina Wesley will head South once again. The True Blood alum has been tapped to star in OWN’s original TV series Queen Sugar, based on the novel by Natalie Baszile. She will portray Nova, a journalist/activist living in New Orleans whose life is altered when her sister returns to Louisiana to help run the failing family sugar cane farm after a tragedy strikes.

Ava DuVernay will write/direct/executive produce the drama. Oprah Winfrey will also be an executive producer, and will have a recurring role. Last time Ava and Oprah teamed up, we got Selma, so this could be really good.

Variety talks to Oprah about diversity in Hollywood

Variety recently had it’s “Power of Women” luncheon and of course Oprah was one of the honorees. They have posted short 2 minute interview with her where she speaks about women directors, how Empire has opened the door for more diversity and getting paid less than her male colleague. It’s worth a listen.
