“Straight Outta Compton,” “Creed,” and “Chi-Raq” win AAFCA awards

The The African-American Film Critics Association has published their list of award winners for 2015 and, to no one’s surprise, Straight Outta Compton took the top honor as best movie. Will Smith nabbed Best Actor for his buzzed about performance (he’s considered a lock for an Oscar nomination) for Concussion. Teyonah Parris got Best Actress for Chi-Raq chi-raq-1-credit-photo_by_parrish_lewis_-_courtesy_of_roadsibut she has about the same amount of Oscar buzz as I do, which is sadly none.

The AAFCA will hold its seventh annual awards on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016. The ceremony will also celebrate the 25th anniversary of Boyz N the Hood and New Jack City with an all-star tribute and concert celebrating the genre of Hip-Hop cinema.

“The influence Hip-Hop has had on Hollywood has never been fully realized or celebrated,” says AAFCA Co-Founder/Fox-TV critic Shawn Edwards. “The genius and power of the culture has helped to produce a new genre of cinema and introduced the world to a new crop of filmmakers who all had new stories from a different perspective to share. It has more than paid off financially and critically.”
