You would think with Lupita N’yongo many accomplishments- Oscar Winner, Fashion Icon, Star Wars Geek – people would be rushing to claim her as their own using any connection possible. Sadly, this is not that case for many in the Latino community.
Lupita, along with Star Wars costar Oscar Isaac recently sat down with Donald Trump’s least favorite reporter Jorge Ramos of Univision to chat about how two actors of Latino origin got their roles in the biggest film of the century to date. The interview was completely conducted in Spanish since everyone in the room was fluent. If you ask Lupita about her nationality she claims to be Mexican-Kenyan, which given the fact that she was born in Mexico City of Kenyan parents is accurate. When she was a few months old, her parents returned to Kenya, but then she returned to Mexico when she was 16, so she grew up in both places and she speaks the language of both countries fluently.
Unfortunately, once the puff piece was posted to Jorge Ramos’s Facebook page the Not-Latin-Enough trolls who have plagued Gina Rodriguez slithered out from under their rocks and started in on their tired old, “You’re not Latina!” chant.
“Lupita N’yongo no es Latina!” (Lupita N’YONGO IS NOT Latina) If you can’t put the apostrophe in the right you probably shouldn’t comment.
“Lupita Nyong’o no es de origen Latino” (Lupita Nyong’o is not of Latin origin) Born in Mexico, makes her a Mexican citizen.
De origen Latino? claro que no!!! (Of Latin origin? Of course not!!!) Using exclamation points doesn’t make it true.
Anyway, you get the idea. There were plenty of people defending Lupita’s claim to Mexican origins, I’m just shocked it needed to happen. If I could claim a connection to Lupita I would be on it like a cheap suit.
