Star Trek debuted 49 years ago yesterday. I felt it was worth a mention since it was one of the first, if not the first show on TV with a diverse cast. I think just about everyone knows by now that Star Trek gave us the first interracial kiss on TV, and the first black woman in a position of authority.
That wasn’t an accident; Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the show was very committed to diversity long before it was proven that diversity was good business. He left a job on another TV show called Riverboat because the producers wouldn’t allow him to introduce black characters. He got his revenge, everyone has heard of Star Trek, no one has heard of Riverboat!
So if you ever need proof that diversity sells, Star Trek should be exhibit A. The show isn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination. but I will salute them for their commitment to diversity back when few network executives could even spell the word.
