FOX has ordered the event series Shots Fired staring Sanaa Lathan. fangirlu posted about this a while back, this is the series about the investigation of a racially charged police shooting, except this would be a black cop shooting a white kid.
Sanaa will star as an “expert investigator who digs into the cases, alongside a special prosecutor sent to the town by the Department of Justice.” The drama, produced by Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood, will examine “the dangerous aftermath of racially charged shootings in a small town in Tennessee.”
“Gina and Reggie have crafted a profoundly moving portrayal of a timely and sensitive issue that pervades our culture at this very moment,” says Fox Broadcasting Entertainment President David Madden in a statement. “This is not only an important story to tell, but also an explosive mystery-thriller, and we couldn’t be in better hands both with the creative team behind this, along with the very talented Sanaa Lathan leading the cast.”
Like fangirlu, I am not really there for this. I honestly do not like the idea of switching up the races of the cop and the victim. The movie Disclosure tried to switch up the roles when it dealt with sexual harassment with the female boss being the harasser, but it bombed badly. The idea was that if the guys could see that sexual harassment wasn’t just a “female thing” they would take it more seriously, but it simply didn’t work. I have lots of faith in Sanaa’s abilities as an actress, but I don’t think changing the roles around will make the point they want to make. I will give it chance, and I truly hope it succeeds because the issue is so important.
