Common, Lena Waithe and Elwood Reid (The Bridge) have joined forces to create a series for Showtime focusing on a young African American man coming of age in Chicago’s South Side. Variety has published the cast list for the as yet unnamed series:
Tequan Richmond (“Everybody Hates Chris,” “General Hospital”) will star as Emmett, an attractive, young African-American teen who believes his sexual prowess is what defines him, but there are consequences, as he has fathered three children by three different women. However, his attitude about what it means to be a man will be challenged when he’s forced to raise one.
“Under the Dome” alum Aisha Hinds will play Emmett’s (Richmond) young, single mother, Jada.
Alex Henderson (“Empire,” “Sense8”) will play Kevin, a 12-year-old boy who has seen more in his young life than more people see in their entire lives.
Sierra McClain (“House of Payne,” “A.N.T. Farm”) will play 18-year-old restaurant manager Jerrika who, along with her boyfriend, is trying to pull herself up in the world, but has trouble getting away from her roots.
Another “Empire” alum Olivia Dawson will play the mother of two yet-to-be-cast main characters Brandon and Coogie. Described as a hard-drinker, Dawson’s character is a woman who never received a lot of love from her parents so she has very little to give to her own children.
Jason Weaver (“Drumline”) will play Ronnie, a street corner philosopher and a fixture in the neighborhood who must go to extraordinary lengths to try and win back the love of his life.
